These top bar hives are not unlike feral colonies in roof eaves. Top bar hives should survive very cold winters with sufficient stores and colony strength. Also, horizontal hives are still used in central and eastern Europe w/o problems. Vertical hives do give more honey production and are easier to handle in migratory operations.
