The 2010 Midwest Historical Archaeology Conference will take place on Saturday, October 9 at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio. This year’s conference will focus on military and cultural conflict in the region since the protohistoric period. 

The conference will officially begin at 9am at Heidelberg University. Dr. Annette Ericksen will lead off the program with a presentation on conflict at an Indian trading post in southern Ohio. A general poster session will then exhibit the work of undergraduate and graduate students as well as professional archaeologists and historians. Dr. Kenneth Lewis will then speak about his work on American Revolution archaeology. After Lunch, Dr. Andrew Schocket will provide a historian’s perspective on the material culture of conflict. Two roundtable sessions will allow participants to engage in small-group conversation on a variety of research and career development topics. Roundtables will be followed by a presentation by Dr. David Bush on Civil War archaeology. The conference will officially close with the presentation of awards for best undergraduate and graduate student research poster. 

Conference attendees are welcome to remain on campus for a 7pm talk by Dr. Dawnie Steadman on her recent research into mass graves from the Spanish Civil War.

On Sunday morning, Dr. David Bush will lead free tours of the Johnson’s Island Civil War Military Prison. Dr. Bush has directed archaeological excavations at the site since 1989. Transportation to the island will be provided free of charge. Vans will depart from Heidelberg at 9am on Sunday and return at noon.
	
Participants are invited to showcase their research during the general poster session. These posters are not restricted to the conference theme of conflict nor must they be about sites in the Midwest. Undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professional archaeologists and historians, are encouraged to participate in the poster session. 

Undergraduate and graduate research posters will be automatically entered into the student poster competition upon submission. The first place award for best undergraduate and graduate poster will consist of a cash prize and certificate. 

The submission deadline for the poster session is Friday, September 17. Submissions must include author names and affiliations, a title, and 150-word abstract. Submissions should be sent to Dr. April Beisaw at [log in to unmask] Accepted posters will be displayed during a 90-minute poster session. 

All participants must register for the conference and pay the registration fee ($15 for undergraduate students, $20 for all others). This fee includes lunch and light refreshments on October 9.  The deadline for pre-registration is Monday, September 20. On-site registration will include a $10 late fee.
