I requeened all my hives this spring that seemed overly defensive, those
that followed me back to the truck or stung regardless of the amount of
smoke used. I'm in middle of spring nectar flow and haven't needed to use
smoke for normal supering, looking at brood area, moving supers around, or
peeking in the hive since requeening. I expect more defensiveness once flow
is over, but perhaps not? Even with all the cool rainy cloudy days we have
been having in Georgia, the bees seem to be easy to work when I would have
expected quite the opposite.
Also, if using plastic foundation for brood rearing, I note that is when I
get lots of burr and drone comb between supers. Seems to be less of a
problem if they have a frame of wax foundation to rear drones. I have
converted all my drawn comb shallows from 9-10 to 8 frames and am very happy
with the resulting fat frames I see the bees drawing out with no bridge or
burr combs visible at present. Also, no propolizing the frames together.
