Mike,
I'd recommend Richard Altick's 1978 book "The Shows of London" if you haven't come across it yet. A great overview of every sort of London show, including the sorts you're talking about, from the middle ages to Victorian times.
Good news: it's still available on Amazon! Bad news: for $147!

Hi everybody,
The theme for next years AAM is "The Museum of the Future." I am looking for
panel members that would be interested in presenting a session on the
relevance of Victorian display technologies like dioramas and hand-painted
murals in modern museums. If you would like to partner up or know somebody
who would drop me a line.
