joe - assuming you are talking about a 'thermal viewing' vs. just IR  
- they are indeed very expensive as you've found....i would look in  
your community and see if there is someone who can help leverage a  
deal, or fund the exhibit.  Years ago when we were working on an  
exhibit that needed a high quality night vision scope, we were able  
to actually find a contractor in the area who gave us a 2nd  
generation model they had used at trade shows....I think sometimes  
rather than sales, it is definitely worth a try to connect with the  
marketing department because they might see the value in such a  
deal.  wish i could be more help...
