The first *regional* Science Fair, for school student
projects from 25 counties in Western Pennsylvania and
West Virginia, was the Pittsburgh Regional School
Science and Engineering Fair which started at
Pittsburgh's original Buhl Planetarium and Institute
of Popular Science in the Summer of 1940. Only two
state-wide Science Fairs are older than Buhl's Fair.
And, yes, it has been quite successful. I participated
in the operation of this Science Fair for most of the
1980s and early 1990s, as well as the operation of the
40th International Science and Engineering Fair which
took place at the Pittsburgh Convention Center in the
Spring of 1989 [celebrating Buhl Planetarium's 50th
anniversary!].
Here are three photographs from Buhl's Science Fair in
1955:

This Science Fair continues under the administration
of Pittsburgh's Carnegie Science Center--here is the
Fair's web site:

We are interested in knowing if museums or science
centers have hosted
science fairs for local schools and if so were they
successful?
Thanks,
