Hello and a happy new year!
I am collecting some subjective assessments of different approaches
to research in astronomy and space sciences in a very general way.
For example, what are the advantages and disadvantages of a space
telescope compared to a ground based telescope?
Thinking about how to present/compare/discuss different ways of
getting access to information from the universe in an astronomy
exhibition, I realize that, disregarding specific scientific goals,
assessment of advantages and disadvantages also depends on a persons
point of view, not only professional but also philosophical,
political etc. This seems to be the case especially when human space
flight is involved.
I am looking foreward to contributions by anyone interested in this
issue. They will help me figure out if and how I should address this
question. This is not a systematic survey, though. Just replying this
e-mail to me is fine.
I suggest six techniques with each three aspects to assess and a
rating system of 1 - 5 (useless/unimportant/disadvantage - useful/
important/advantage).
ground telescopes (such as Keck in Hawaii)
- science
- humanity
- cost
space telescopes (such as Hubble)
- science
- humanity
- cost
space probes (such as Voyager)
- science
- humanity
- cost
robots (such as Mars Rovers)
- science
- humanity
- cost
human space exploration (such as Apollo)
- science
- humanity
- cost
scientific ballooning (such as CREAM)
- science
- humanity
- cost
It would be helpful for me to know your background (lay, astronomer
in x field, etc.).
Thank you so much.
Cheers,
Hanna
