Moisture would be my guess. The Nebraska locations of basswood along the
Missouri River never hurt for moisture. A deep rooted tree in an area with
deep soil moisture always available. Basswood areas away from the River
bottoms often fail mainly due to not enough *sub soil moisture*.
As I said before the beekeeping family has been producing basswood honey
along the Missouri River bottoms for decades and to my knowledge has ever
seen a total failure as Davenport writes of.
