This is my observation, too.

>5 year average crop up to before Varroa was 8,781 tonnes
5 year average crop up to and including 2008 crop is 10,208 tonnes

In the U.S., beekeeping was easy for several years after varroa was
discovered, while the first round of miticides worked.  It hasn't been as
much fun since.
