a few other thoughts:
1. in "the buzz about bees", jurgen tautz talks about the bees depositing proplis on the edges of cells to "tune" the comb for proper vibration transmission for dancing when the comb is heated beyond the bees ability to keep it cool and stiffer.
2. if propolis is "varnished" on the inside of the cell before an egg is laid, then a freshly laid cell swabbed with alcohol on a qtip, it should pick up proplolis. it will pick up other things as well, but if there is no brown stain on the swab, than i doubt it was varnished, perhaps a thin layer of wax is depositied?
maybe i'll try this this afternoon
