Spend some quiet time on the grounds of the Alamo; even with the grackles it's a provocative place. Be sure to take the entire "mission trail" and if you are there on a Sunday you can go to the mariachi mass at San Jose mission church. Check out the Spanish governor's palace and La Villita (on the river walk). Take time (and a trolley) down to El Mercado. There are two across the street from each other, both mostly directed toward tourists, but interesting nonetheless. Mi Tierra restaurant is supposed to be authentic, but I have never found good Mexican food outside of my families there. Visit the King William district of fine old houses. Go north on I-35 a few miles and take a break at the inn at Salado (they pronounce it Sa-lay-do). Try to work in a day at Fredericksburg. The streets are paved with chert.
Enjoy!
