Nice recommendation on the Natchez Trace. See the South on its own
terms.
If you're in Birmingham, the Sloss Furnaces are a true education in
American industry. As a "museum" it just barely qualifies; as a
"relic" or "ruin" of that distant 20th Century, it should not be missed.

> You might consider taking the Natchez Trace as a part of your journey.
> It is a gorgeous break from the interstate (if you can relax and stand
> the low speed limit) with no commercial traffic and no billboards, and
> numerous stops for nature, history, and scenery. It cuts through
> Mississippi from Natchez north, through parts of Alabama and into
> Tennessee all the way to Nashville.
