Jim,
Without testing ( F.A.B.I.S or DNA and Tucson lab will test for you if you
send samples) its hard to say a hive is Africanized (AHB) but what you
describe fits my experience. Queens act different in an Africanized hive and
AHB is now in Oklahoma.
Your method is being used but in most commercial circles the hive is
depopulated to eliminate the drones.
Even if not AHB letting a hive get so large when aggressive will provide
plenty of aggressive genes to the hives in your area.
I had a couple hot hives this spring but when moved to another yard the bees
became docile so for now I am leaving alone. I do not keep aggressive hives
around although in my younger days I did.
