Bees are perishing at an epidemic rate in Southern California, ravaged by a
mysterious malady called Colony Collapse Disorder that is punishing
beekeepers already dealing with an infestation of mites and a diminishing
number of places to put their colonies.
Entire colonies are falling to CCD, raising questions about the use of
pesticides in agriculture and underscoring the fragility of farming and its
vulnerability to disease and pests. Officials say that bees pollinate about
30 percent of the food crops in California: Apples, avocados, melons and
many other crops would disappear without the dedicated assistance of the
bees during their six-week lifespans.
