At  Techniquest (Cardiff, Wales) we close annually for one week (M-F.)  During this time, essential maintenance, painting, deep cleaning and training goes on.  It usually happens during the second week of school in September as schools seem to stagger which day they start back due to teacher training / inset / CPD days during the first week.   Schools are not likely to come out on a big trip during the second week of term, so it seems to work out nicely.

A word of warning, though.  Make sure you publicise this on your website and even at the entrance for a few weeks leading up to the closure.  We usually advertise the closing throughout the month of August and still get disappointed visitors at the door during our shut-down week.  To help ease the distress caused to small children and their parents, we usually offer a family ticket for the visitors to come back free on a day when we are open.
