As someone from the computer game generation, points and a storyline go
very well together (and aren't mutually exclusive) as it makes the
experience compelling and slightly competitive. You care about the story
by getting more points. You'll probably find some people play for the
story, and some people play for the points. Hopefully, a majority will
care about both, and most of all, the learning content. I guess prizes
would be OK, but if the experience hits all the right notes where groups of
people work and/or compete together, a co-opetition if you will , then
prizes aren't necessary. In fact, physical prizes (or even abstract
prizes) may introduce a reason to cheat the system, and could be abused.

If you want to track points, I would talk to the The Tech in San Jose.
They use a bar code on the back of their admission tickets where visitors
can track/revisit their experience on the web. A similar system could
easily be used for your idea.

Hi Alissa,

It's not clear (to me, at least) if you WANT visitors to visit every
station.

If you do want visitors to visit each station, in my experience it seems to
work best to connect the task of visiting each station into some storyline
with an inherent challenge, rather than points (Points for what? valuable
prizes?)

For example, "Can you help Screwy Squirrel find five different leaf shapes
around the museum?"

Certain types of visitors really rise to these types of challenges and will
really expend a great deal of effort in completing the inventory of
stations.

Also, many visitors enjoy the added challenge of finding all the stations
if
there is some "bonus" to visiting each station like being able to use all
the answers/pictures/whatever from each station to complete the answer to a
riddle, or solve a code, etc. (For instance, using the leaf example above,
"Can you solve the riddle by making a word from the first letter of the
name
of the tree each leaf comes from?")

Good luck!
