I almost always agree with Steve's reviews, but not with this one, other
than I, too, was incredulous at Corigliano's claim of never hearing
Dylan's music.
>Furthermore, I can't find one memorable song in the set. Unlike
>Bernstein and Rorem, Corigliano's not an especially gifted melodist.
>Many of these songs exhibit a great amount of skill -- I think especially
>of the chorus of "Mr. Tambourine Man" -- but not a lot of imagination.
>The gestures come across as second-hand.
I first heard this work at the Cabrillo Music Festival, where it was
rapturously greeted by the audience. I found every song memorable, but
"Blowin' in the Wind" and "Chimes of Freedom" riveted me with tunes I
sang to myself for days afterwards. I felt Corigliano had a great sense
of drama, imaginative orchestration, and a ton of heart.
I hope some other listers weigh in on this CD, one of favorite releases
of last year.
