Hello Brian,
I've seen the Ferrofluid containers from the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network kits get kicked around for years without staining the tubes.
The kit is described: http://www.nisenet.org/catalog/programs/exploring_materials_-_ferrofluid_nanodays_08_09_10_11
And their vendor source is listed as Teacher Source: http://www.teachersource.com/ElectricityAndMagnetism/Ferrofluid/FerrofluidPreformDisplayCell.aspx
They say it's not the same stuff as the bulk kit.

Subject: Non-staining Ferrofluid Suspension Recipes?

Does anyone have a recipe for liquids to suspend/place Ferro fluid in
where it will not stain the plastic/glass/etc. you are using? Or, has
anyone tried something and have it not work?
