Here at the CT Science Center we have a display of rock that is in a transparent Lucite tube. The tube is about 10 feet long and horizontal with a display that describes what the visitors are seeing. I don't know how well it would work for you in IL with soil and so forth, but for a bedrock display it seems to be working nicely.

Subject: Soil cross-section display

Does anyone have suggestions for constructing a display showing layers
of soil in cross-section? We'd like to show in general terms the layers
of soil -- from topsoil down to bedroock -- underneath our region. Some
kind of tall transparent planter? A terrarium? Has anyone done this or
seen it done creatively elsewhere?
