Good Afternoon Gail,
We have noticed over the past several years; that is difficult to
influence significant attendance increases during time periods of
normally low attendance. This would be especially true if you had a
public, which was "conditioned" to know that you were normally closed
during a particular time of the year....and, now during this same time
period......the science center will be open (just this one time for a
special exhibit). I would imagine that the public's "operant
conditioning" could be "temporarily" suspended by spending large sums of
money to advertise and promote this "new" message and concept to the
public. Keep in mind that the following year that same public might
show up your door when you are again closed.
Best Wishes,
Wesley

Subject: A blockbuster September?

COSI is considering booking a blockbuster exhibit over the summer and
retaining it into September. Normally, we close for three weeks in
September because attendance is practically non-existent and we get a
lot of big maintenance and cleaning jobs done that are hard to
accomplish when we are open. However, we now have the opportunity to
hold a blockbuster exhibit over the extra month. We are wondering if
any other museums have experience with this. Does the great attendance
continue or even go up because it is the last chance to see the
blockbuster? Or does attendance follow the normal trend of dropping
significantly in September? Any help and suggestions appreciated.
