If you have thousands of boxes you maybe can't criss cross all of them and keep them expose to light,
which generally prevents moth infestation.
Of course if you stack them criss crossed you also expose them to mice which will eat out the more protein rich areas (which are likely to hold more of the disease organisms) and thus might help improve the heaqlth of colonies.
