Dear Colleagues,
 
  Christa Beranek of UMASS Boston and I are putting together a session for the 2012 SHA Conference in Baltimore Maryland.  The focus will be on the archaeology of gardens and scientific agriculture in early America.  We are particularly interested in papers that speak to the role of gardens, greenhouses, orangeries, and other new horticultural innovations in American culture in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.  We hope to have papers that discuss issues of power, science, technology, gender, race, and socioeconomic class.  The session is tentatively titled, “People Who Lived With Glass Houses: The Archaeology of Gardens and Scientific Agriculture in Early America.”  Mark Leone has graciously agreed to be our session discussant.
