Hi Keith and anyone else.

I asked the Bottle Research Group and received two replies.

Bill Lockhart

From Bill Lindsey:

That is a well known brewing company from San Francisco. Wieland is
listed in Van Wieren as having that name attached to a brewery(s) in SF
from 1855 through Prohibition (1934...though certainly he didn't live
that long).

There were a lot of different mouth-blown bottles listed in the
Martin's book on California beers with California Bottle Co. and/or
Wieland's name on them...and they are a commonly seen item at bottle
shows. The bottles date mostly from the late 1880s to Prohibition
(1919)...and a lot of them were made by the PCGW most likely.

From Carol Serr:

Here is one variety of a similar bottle…but with SAC. Instead of S.F.

http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/blob-top-john-wielands-beer

no base photo, but seller states it reads: S F & P G W

From another auction:

“The Wieland Brewery began in 19th century San Francisco, then later
migrated to San Jose, I'm told.”

A mailed (in 1910) postcard showing the brewery…

Ah ha! Here is the very bottle that (I assume) Keith’s mold made:

or a better photo:

I assume this is the same John Weiland…

http://articles.sfgate.com/2002-03-10/news/17533875_1_club-s-quarterly-magazine-dolphin-club-swimmers

“The Dolphin Club is as much a part of San Francisco's cultural lore
as Spreckels sugar or Anchor Steam beer, though considerably more
colorful. It was started in 1877 as a private club by John Wieland's
family and the Kehrlein brothers, German immigrants who wanted a place
for social gatherings for their friends.

The Wieland family was legendary in the city for its philanthropic
largesse and the popularity of its Philadelphia Brewery, which sated the
thirst of generations of Barbary Coast pub crawlers. When John Wieland
died, the whole city turned out for his funeral and drank to his robust
memory.”

The brewery was in business by June 1895, based on a newspaper ad….

Ah…found this:

http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=0066gs

“John Wieland Brewery, 1856-1920. Now here’s a brewery that never
changed names - kind of a rarity. Located at 228-246 2nd Street, this
brewery tried to restart after prohibition, but never got into
production.”

Good Morning,

I have come across a two piece bottle mold in New Jersey
with the following inscription:

            CAL.BOTTLING Co.

            JOHN WIELAND'S

              EXPORT BEER

                        S.F.

Are any of you western archaeologists familiar with bottles made from
this mold or the company? Are there known Dates of operation?
