From this year, the Society has decided to award two separate annual prizes, for undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations. The Postgraduate prize is open to dissertations dealing with any aspect of post-medieval archaeology, submitted for a taught postgraduate course (diploma, MA or MSc level) in a British or Irish University in the 2008-2009 academic year. Please see the call for nominations (at the bottom of this email), or contact me, for further information.

The deadline for nominations is 15th December 2009.

Please note that for this year only, my colleague Audrey Horning will administer the prize. Please send a copy of the nominated dissertation with a completed nomination form to her at the address below. Nomination forms can be downloaded from www.spma.org.uk/prizes.php.

Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology

Postgraduate Dissertation Prize 2009

The Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology has now separated its annual student dissertation prize into two separate awards, one for undergraduate and one for postgraduate submissions. The postgraduate prize will be for the best dissertation submitted for a taught postgraduate degree or diploma in British and Irish universities concerned with the post-medieval archaeology of Britain, Europe, or the wider world, from 1500 to the present day.

The prize is £250, with free membership of the Society for one year, and a conference bursary for the year of the award. The prize judges will also consider whether a paper based on the dissertation would be appropriate for publication in the journal Post-Medieval Archaeology, subject to the approval of the editors.

British and Irish university and college departments are invited to nominate not more than one dissertation presented for the 2008-2009 academic year. In cases where an institution has more than one department teaching in the subject area, each department may make a separate nomination.

Please note that entries from individual students are not accepted.

The deadline for nominations is 15th December 2009

Please send one copy of the dissertation with a completed copy of the attached nomination form, to the address given on the form. The dissertation will be returned at the end of the competition: please provide an addressed return label to facilitate this.

Council aims to announce the result of the award in spring 2010. The winner and the Department will be informed directly, and the outcome published in the Society’s newsletter and on the Society’s website http://www.spma.org..uk. Council reserves the right not to make an award.
