On January 16, 2009, Secretary of Interior Kempthorne issued final approval
for designation of the New Philadelphia, Illinois town site as a National Historic
Landmark based on its archaeological resources and historical significance.

Congratulations to all involved in this nomination! Charlotte King of the
University of Maryland handled coordination and drafting of the nomination
with the advice and guidance of Paul Shackel, Director of the Center for
Heritage Resource Studies. The nomination received the support of former
U.S. Senator for Illinois, and now President-Elect, Barack Obama, and
members of the McWorter family, among others.
