I think this was meant to be a cartoon featuring paleontologists, not that the greater public will always make such finer shades of distinction.  (Reminds me of a visit we made, when I was a kid, to Dinosaur National Monument.)  Perhaps there are visual cues in the hatwear:

Pith Helmet = Paleontologist (and in other contexts, Big White Hunter)
Fedora = Archaeologist
Any others?
