THIS MONTH’S PROGRAM: THURSDAY August 16, 2007
ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE OF WOMEN ON THE SPANISH FRONTIER
WITH DR. REBECCA J. WAUGH
[Rescheduled from July 19]
Time 7:30 p.m.
Place: Old Pueblo auditorium, 5100 W. Ina Road Bldg. 8, Tucson metro area.
Dr. Rebecca J. Waugh earned her doctorate in anthropology from the University of Arizona in December 2005. Her dissertation investigated methods that could be used to identify women at Spanish sites in Arizona using the archaeological record. Dr. Waugh spent the 2006-2007 school year as an instructor at Old Pueblo Archaeology Center working with classes from schools from throughout southern Arizona, and currently works for a Tucson cultural resources consulting company.
Dr. Waugh will discuss how the archaeological record at historical sites helps us understand how different subgroups of society, like women, may have contributed to the culture. On the Spanish colonial frontier in what is now Arizona, many different people made their lives at towns, presidios, ranchos, and other settlements, and the archaeological record enriches our understanding of how colonial Spanish society developed on the frontier. Archaeologists may infer that women were present in Spanish colonial sites when excavations recover artifacts and personal items that probably belonged to women, or that were frequently used in the kinds of jobs women did. This presentation will show how archaeologists use historical supply invoices and records, paintings, and artifacts excavated at other early Spanish sites to identify the kinds of artifacts that may indicate that women lived at a particular place, whether or not there are historical records of women there.
No reservations are needed to attend Old Pueblo’s Third Thursdays programs.
