I spoke briefly with Kirk Webster, who said that his losses were 40-50%
last winter. He said that he does feed bees at times, but his experience
has led him not to feed those that he knows will eventually succumb to
mites -- since he does not use mitecides. He said it was a poor year for
forage.
I phoned him to ask about making wax foundation. Both he and Peter Borst
have had a lot of hands-on experience, and both said that it is a
crazy-making enterprise. Webster does make his own, but not without a
grief-filled learning curve. Anyone else making wax foundation?
