Galliard Ensemble Wind Quintet Composition Competition
The winners of the Galliard Ensemble Wind Quintet Composition Competition
1999 are:-
Professional section winner - Luis Timoco - Autumn Wind
Professional section runner up - Steve Cohen - Wind Quintet
Amateur section winner - Tara Guram - Auditory Duality
Luis Timoco is a Portuguese composer, currently studying at the Royal
Academy of Music in London. His wind quintet is one of the first wind
quintets to effectively use post-minimalist techniques. The second
movement includes such extremes of pitch and volume, that it led to the
death of one of my tropical fish during an adjudication session.
The pieces by Timoco and Guram will be performed at the Galliard Ensemble
Wind Quintets recital at the Wanstead and Woodford Festival of Chamber
Music, (South Woodford, East London, England) 7:30pm, Saturday 17 April,
1999. The concert will also include music by Briccialdi, Ibert, Poulenc
and Franciax.
The competition was extremely difficult to judge, with so many exciting
new pieces from all over the world and written in such a wide variety of
styles.
We were very pleased that the critics were as impressed with James Olsen,
the winner of the children's section of last year's competition, as we had
been. For many in the audience of the Galliard Ensemble's Park Lane Group
Purcell Room recital last month Olsen's piece was one of the highlights of
the recital.

Best wishes,
Dr Malcolm Galloway
