ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

Hi all!

My biggest caution is to be very careful about the sonic soup you
create in your museum. In areas that are very active and full of
laughter, conversation, and loud exhibits, adding a soundtrack to the
mix creates an extreme auditory overload, and adds to visitor
fatigue. Any place you anticipate people having conversations,
including point-of-contact zones like admissions, store, cafe, etc.,
for every decibel you tune in, your staff and visitors need to exceed
that just to be heard. It's darn HARD to chat with your friends over
the levels of noise in some places! I am not suggesting not having
music and sound, but just being very cautious and judicious with
their use.

Best-

Sam
