Chuck,
You might want to refer to a historic context that was prepared for refuse deposits in Arizona, but which has applicability throughout the US (except that people in the East will not have to deal with cans as we do here in AZ!). You can download the context as a pdf, entitled "Down in the Dumps: Context Statement and Guidance on Historical-Period Waste Management and Refuse Deposits," authored by Michael Sullivan and Carol Griffith, and edited by Terry Majewski, by googling "Down in the Dumps", Arizona. It should be the first item that appears.

Subject: terminology
Is there a consensus on the proper terminology for the discussion of
historic refuse concentrations?
I've always used the terminology historic midden as opposed to historic
trash dump.
