Subject: Internships in Field Archaeology (4) - Fredericksburg, VA
Internships in Field Archaeology, 2010
The George Washington Foundation (GWF) is now accepting applications for
its Internships in Field Archaeology (four positions). The successful
applicants will participate in the ninth year of an intensive,
large-scale excavation at George Washington's Ferry Farm, located in
Fredericksburg, Virginia. A National Historic Landmark, Ferry Farm is
an outdoor museum and the former plantation home where George Washington
grew to manhood. The archaeological research at this site focuses on
the colonial era. In addition to this, important evidence of the site's
prehistoric, Civil War, and twentieth-century past is frequently
encountered during excavation.
These internships offer the opportunity for individuals to work closely
with GWF professional staff, while gaining excavation, recording,
analytical, and public interpretation skills in a museum setting.
Interns will be engaged in all aspects of field work, including shovel
shaving plowzone, hand excavating features, screening soils, mapping
features/soil layers, photo documentation, and interacting with the
public.
The minimum qualification for consideration is a prior archaeological
field school or similar formal training in archaeology. Preference will
be given to applicants with prior archaeological experience on historic
and/or public sites, and to those who are pursuing or have completed a
college degree in Anthropology, History or a related field of study.
The duration of the internships is from May 10 to August 13. A 40-hour,
Monday to Friday, work schedule will be followed. The only exception is
that interns will be required to work July 4th weekend. The internships
pay $12.00 per hour. Per Diem, housing and meals are NOT included.
The application deadline is Wednesday, April 14. Those interested
should submit a current resume, the names of two references, and a brief
statement outlining their archaeological experience and interest in the
internship. Please email all application materials to David Muraca,
