From the Guardian:
>>>>>>This discovery will have set the world of animal behaviour abuzz.
Vertebrates - and especially primates - were thought to be the only
creatures that could hold in their heads the concepts of "the same" and
"different". Now the team from France, Germany and Australia say their
research shows "that higher cognitive functions are not a privilege of
vertebrates."<<<<<<<
The Guardian is not a good source of data. It has been shown some time ago
that bees can distinguish patterns even in the complex form of a face. That
doesn't mean they "hold in their heads" the pattern. It is only necessary
that they respond to it. Pavlovs dogs didn't hold stimuli in their heads.
