All, I have a few items from my recent work in the British Virgin Islands (mid 1700s contexts) that I am having trouble identifying or getting more specific dating information for. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Descriptions and links to pictures below. Thanks! John Chenoweth UC Berkeley Musket or Rifle Butt Plate. Hard to see because of my poor photography skills and the encrusting of plaster, but there is a thin decorative groove all along the edge of the top (pyramidal) portion (shown best in photo #511). http://www.flickr.com/photos/52524558@N00/4153856412/in/set-72157622921619696/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/52524558@N00/4153094587/in/set-72157622921619696/ (top view, photo #511) http://www.flickr.com/photos/52524558@N00/4153092217/in/set-72157622921619696/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/52524558@N00/4153852070/in/set-72157622921619696/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/52524558@N00/4153850974/in/set-72157622921619696/ (profile) http://www.flickr.com/photos/52524558@N00/4153089183/in/set-72157622921619696/ (profile) In the same unit, a few levels higher, we also found this item. Best guess at the moment is that it is a fragment of decorative tracery also from a gun of some sort. Metallic, probably brass. http://www.flickr.com/photos/52524558@N00/4153100913/in/set-72157622921619696/ Pipe Bowl with “WN” Maker’s Mark with three-pointed crown above (possibly a faint crown below as well). I’ve found several possibilities in the literature, but none of the sources I have at hand described them in more detail than just giving the initials, so there is no way to determine which “WN” we’re dealing with. http://www.flickr.com/photos/52524558@N00/4153103469/in/set-72157622921619696/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/52524558@N00/4153862804/in/set-72157622921619696/ Thanks much!
