From my experience, it seems that Facebook is where a lot of folks are spending their free time on the web these days. I resisted signing up for a long time, but finally gave in last year and was shocked to see how many friends were on the site. My website archaeologyfieldwork.com and its forums have been around in one form or another for 14 years, and we continue to have a few new members sign up each day. It has been a consistently slow and steady growth for the most part. However, I started a Facebook fan page for those who wish to receive the daily employment listings (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/archaeologyfieldworkcom-jobs/205850812176?ref=ts) and was surprised to see 285 people sign up in short period of time. There is also an accompanying Twitter feed but it has not proven to be so popular. Twitter has its place, but I think most people prefer a higher level of interaction which Facebook seems to provide.
