Prehistoric Lower Colorado River Buff Ware pottery from the California
Desert includes types laced with fine, golden, mica that Native American
potters say holds high temperatures and evenly distributes the heat. Some clays
are rich in mica and another family of prehistoric pottery, Tizon Brown
Ware, appears to simply include it because it is naturally mixed in some
regional deposits. Whether deliberately added or natural, the mica helps control
the heat.
