The challenge there is getting the specimens clean enough to be able 
to identify the true color. Some soils have a dedicated clean proof 
ability. I guess you may get an,"almost nearly but not quiet hardly", 
result. I have used a weak bleach solution several times with no 
noticeable harm. A toothbrush with an alcohol wash seems to do a good 
job in the field.
