For Janacek you can't go wrong with the ecstatic Sinfonietta (especially
if you like brass) and Glagolitic Mass. Kubelik and the Bavarian Radio
Symphony shine in both. Other Janacek worth a gander include the Lachian
dances (Naxos's recording is quite good although the other works on that
CD are less well done) and several choral works: "Na Soladny Cartak"
("There upon the Mountain"--a brief cantata for men's chorus and
orchestra), an all too brief "Hospodine, Pomiluj Nas" (a slavonic
equivalent of "Kyrie, Eleison Imas"), and the transcendently beautiful
"Otcenas" ("Our Father"--setting of the Lord's Prayer for tenor, chorus,
organ, and harp). Some of the Crossroads (originally Supraphon) recordings
of these are dandies--hopefully they're still available somehow. If you're
interested in piano music you can't go wrong with Firkusny's recordings
thereof (Kubelik conducts in the ensemble works). All told a
transcendently eloquent composer with a voice all his own.
