While conducting the RIAS Symphony in postwar Berlin Fricsay excelled at
the German classical repertoire. I still havce a couple of his Haydn LPs,
and they are of premium quality! But of course, being a Hungarian, as well
as the son of the greatest Hungarian bandmaster of his time, Fricsay also
excelled in interpreting Hungarian composers, including, as Mr. Zehm
notes, Bartok and Kodaly. I've never heard him do Stravinsky, but I have
not the slightest doubt that he had the musical background to deliver him,
too.
