10 for 10 / Spring 2010

Hand to Hand
The quarterly journal of the Association of Children's Museums

In response to lean economic times, museums are focusing on developing new
-- or retooling existing -- programs or operations to boost revenue.

For the upcoming spring issue of Hand to Hand that focuses on the topic of
maximizing earned income, we are looking for the best recent examples of
small changes that have had big impact on earned income: admissions,
memberships, fee programs, camps, special events, gift shop sales, birthday parties,
facility rental, cafes or food vendors, advertising (print or web
communications) and others.

What are some of the methods currently underway among all types of museums,
including children's museums, trying to maximize revenue? What is working
well? What are some of the challenges? What are some of the mission
considerations when a museum decides to boost revenue-producing capacity? What other
marketable services or expertise do museums have that can become new and
perhaps unexpected avenues of earned income?

The 10 best will be published in Hand to Hand, spring 2010 as short
articles. Any idea, any size or type of museum, any location.
