Don't forget the importance of 'indicator species' when looking for signs of
pollution as a project for children.
The conspicuous absence or unusual abundance of certain species of living
organisms can be dramatic indicators of various pollutants. It's well worth
reading up on this to find out which are the relevant species for your
project, how to identify them and where to find unpolluted populations for
comparison.
This approach can be more appealling to young people than chemical tests. It
can also directly show shockingly large consequences of environmental
pollution which are unnoticed by most people. This makes participants in
your project CARE about pollution, which is pretty important.

Give people facts and you feed their minds for an hour.
Awaken curiosity and they feed their own minds for a lifetime.
