I too find something missing in Brahms Symphony performances. I think
the symphonies are great music, but it's something in the performances.
The most satisfying ones I find are usually older. Does this say
something about the style of playing? I especially find string playing
missing something in more recent performances.

Are they just too familiar? Nevertheless, there's not much like the feeling
when a performance of one goes well. It just doesn't seem to happen as
much as I would like.
