Surely the relationship between performer and audience is a two-way street?
An attentive and enthusiastic audience helps to fire up a performer. And
a coughing audience must be an intolerable distraction to a musician, who
is trying to focus on his playing. After all, even at tennis matches the
umpire tells spectators to be quiet when a player steps up to serve! I
don't see why musical performers should expect anything less.
