If you're using a Mac, you might want to try ScoreWriter (by Cakewalk).
It's easy to use, has a good set of editing tools, and allows mouse,
keyboard or midi input.  (Street price about $50)

A significant step up and available for Wintel boxes as well as Macs is
Coda's Allegro, a more affordable, but less powerful version of Finale.
A nice feature of Allegro is that it's files are fully compatible with
Finale, if you ever decide to upgrade.  (Street price about $ 130)
