My first reaction would be to question the importance of hearing the audio well.  Does it use audio other than music or simple feedback beeps? Is there narration?  That says a lot about where it gets placed. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's off to the side. It needs to be somewhere it is not competing with other sound sources let alone the crowd. Example: don't place it next to the exhibit that gets screams from it's users or the one with the noisy fans.

From an experiential point of view, if it offers a longer experience that you want to encourage then put it in a less trafficked corner and maybe even offer a stool or chair. Better yet design it so that two or three kids or a family can gather around/sit and explore together. This can be done with either a bigger screen or a second slave above.
