As a consulting grant writer, I can tell you that many educators and
designers have a tough time with grant proposals because of two significant issues.
First: educators and designers haven't had enough exposure to the grant
writing process to know that whatever they put down on paper is NOT a contract.
Thus, they are concerned about being held to a process they're ask to develop
instantaneously.
Second: educators and designers tend to be multidimensional thinkers. Grants
are essentially two dimensional (linear) documents. Everything must be
expressed in terms of goals, chronological sequence, and outcomes. Fact is that
exhibits and education don't truly work that way. It's quite a trick to think
both multidimensionally and linearly at the same time!
If you'd like a person with that sort of perspective to talk and/or do
hands-on exercises at a session, I'd be glad to. I teach a class along these lines
(Writing for Fundraisers) at the University of Pennsylvania Fundraising
Certificate Program!
Best,
Lisa
