> Working title > -> Flying by the Seat of Your Pants: Operating Outside of Your Area of Expertise.
>
> I am interested in submitting a proposal for a panel presentation for the 2004 ASTC Conference. The theme of the session would provide insights on how museum professionals can best function even when they are forced to perform outside of their areas of education and experience.
>
> An exhibit designer from OMSI would participate by presenting "Graphic Design for the Non-Designer."
>
> Among other things, this would cover some of the fundamentals of Graphic Design. For example; What are serif and sans-serif fonts? What do they do for readability? Did you know one is best for screen and the other is best for print? What about background value? What is a widow? When are columns a good idea? What about justification, line spacing, and kerning?
>
> We would do some myth-busting here too. Did you know that when presenting any significant amount of text, making it all-caps and bold actually makes it harder to read?
>
> This wouldn't just be a snooty, "we think this looks better" session. There is a body of research that supports many of these standards and we would talk about some of that.
>
> Is anyone interested in presenting a topic that might fit well with this? It certainly doesn't have to be design oriented. We need 2-3 other presenters to work within this format. Possible topics include marketing, finding pro-bono scientific experts, writing grant proposals, designing components for the Americans with DIsabilities Act. Your session could be either direct instruction on a topic, or it might cover finding available resources.
>
Think of this as a "Science Museums for Dummies" kind of thing.
