It occurs to me that CFLs and LEDs might not take kindly to wildly alternating currents and voltages. You may need to have an easily-visible readoutindicating how much power you are generating, and what you could do with that power. (1 LED, 1 CFL, 1 incandescent, etc.) That would make it easier to notice when small loads (like phone chargers) are added.

One of my favorite (oversimplified, I'm sure) rules of thumb is that the energy saved by recycling an aluminum can is roughly equivalent to half-filling that can with gasoline and pouring the gasoline on the ground.
