I think it depends on where the map is and what you're expecting to convey with it. If it's in a high traffic area where a lot of people are standing on it so it's not particularly visible, it's not going to be very effective. On the other hand, I've seen geographical gobos moving around on floors that are sort of entrancing, even if I didn't come away with cartographic wisdom afterward.

I'm looking for feedback on this topic:
How effective are maps that are actually on floors of your science centers/museums? Do people look at them? Notice them? Or just walk over them w/o really bothering to find out what they're walking over?
