I would do some work on the deep islamic roots of pharmacology. There are some great illustrated manuscripts with beautiful and fanciful illustrations, but also some of the first botanical taxonomies were established in the arab countries based upon plants' medicinal uses. Here is one guy to look up...Abu Hanifah Ahmad ibn Dawud Dinawari (828 – 896).

The whole field of ethnobotany is rich with eye openers, from traditional chinese medicine to ayurveda, both of which go back centuries or millenia, but are very well developed in contemporary life. Also there are fascinating and changing traditions in south america, the caribbean, etc.

One of my favorite visuals in this regard is a film I saw a long time ago of a man undergoing brain surgery with nothing but acupuncture as as an anaesthetic. He gets up after they sew him up, and shakes the doctors hands and walks out. Commie propaganda? Dunno, don't see it on youtube.
